USB3.0 for HP Proliant Gen8 server
Recently had something of a struggle trying to find a USB 3.0 card to work in an HP Proliant ML350p gen8 running Windows Server 2008R2.
A solution that has worked uses a Startech 2 Port PCI Express (PCIe) SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter with UASP - SATA Power PEXUSB3S24. This card uses a Renesas chipset and has been perfectly behaved. (In experimenting, I also found that this card would install on Windows Server 2012R2 without additional drivers.)
Note that I was unable to get the 4-port version of the above card PEXUSB3S42 to work at all, and worse than that it caused a server crash with Unrecoverable PCI Error. That card uses a VIA chipset.
The conclusion is that the Renesas chipset is the one to go for.
In order to power the USB card, for the ML350p gen8 you need a long SATA power extension that will reach from the area behind the bezel to the PCI slots at the back, perhaps 60cm. I found a suitable lead at the Spanish company Cablematic, who shipped the item from Spain promptly and without difficulty. http://www.cablematic.co.uk/
